ANDY MELLER
Andy has held a variety of jobs in education, including those of Head Teacher, advisor to Local Authorities, Literacy Consultant and a mentor and coach to newly appointed Head Teachers.
Currently in his second headship at a large primary school in Gloucestershire, Andy successfully led his first school out of Serious Weaknesses and into Category 1 ‘Beacon’ status within 3 years.
Inspired at an early stage in his career by Eric Hoffer’s view that ‘In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists’, Andy is firm in his belief that schools should focus on learning rather than teaching and is keen to explore and develop what he terms ‘learnability’ (the key skills of effective learners) as the foundation for this. Passionate about the need to ensure the child remains at the heart of all we do in school, Andy has demonstrated an ability to achieve high standards via a curriculum underpinned by creativity and experiential learning and rooted in vibrancy and colour – actors, musicians, dancers, scientists and artists are all regular visitors to school.
Described as both forward thinking and inspirational by colleagues who have attended his courses, Andy uses humour, drama and story telling techniques to convey his message in an engaging and entertaining manner. He continues to hone his presentational skills by touring at weekends with a professional theatre company.
Andy has considerable experience of working with teachers, Head Teachers, governors and support staff to help develop and improve the quality of learning experienced by children. He has spent time working in an advisory capacity with both Worcestershire and Gloucestershire Local Authorities and has led training and school development support at both school and conference level across both counties. He is a firm believer in the value of empowerment and distributed leadership and believes everyone, staff and pupils alike, has the ability to ‘lead without title’.
Andy has worked extensively in the field of school leadership/management and specialist areas include curriculum innovation, school development planning, promoting learnability, improving achievement in writing, enhancing school governance, achieving work/life balance, leading without title, refreshing the leader within and preparing for headship. He is now available for consultancy, staff training and conference speaking/leadership and will happily tailor training packages to meet individual need.
